Lindsey Buckingham Song That Sounds Like Lady Blue Intro

All songs with a banjo are cool songs, right? Banjo playerMaybe that's a broad generalization, but here's a comprehensive list of some of the most popular songs containing banjo. What do you think? Did we miss any? Which ones are your favorite?

Flowers on the Wall – Statler Brothers

Such a great song. In my mind, it has become the epitome of diversity in film scenes. As an author, I now look to songs with banjo and wonder "how creepy would this be in the background?"

Gentle on my Mind – Glen Campbell

Singing about love lost, divorce, and desperately trying to move on, the lyrics and music of the great John Hartford and the performance and voice of the even greater Glen Campbell brilliantly layout the feelings of regret and heartbreak.

Mean – Taylor Swift

When I found out this song was loosely based on a pompous music critic I have been following for years, Bob Lefsetz, I fell in love with Taylor Swift. The coolest thing about the track? Swift is playing an unorthodox, 6-string banjo. This gives hope to guitar players like this guy. I want one for Christmas!

Dueling Banjos

Before "Flowers on the Wall" appeared in Pulp Fiction, there was this song in the movieDeliverance.

I Can't Decide – Scissor Sisters

I became interested in Scissor Sisters by accident when I discovered their song "I Don't Feel Like Dancing." The same album included this sarcastic, creepy song featuring a banjo. (Warning: Explicit Lyrics)

Take it Easy – Eagles

We don't really hear the banjo until the the final 45 seconds of the song, but holy cow. It was this movement that pigeon-holed the Eagles into the newly imagined format of "country rock."

Unwell – Matchbox Twenty

When Taylor Swift was a wee-one and Matchbox Twenty was still mainstream popular, guitarist Kyle Cook pulled out the 6-string banjo and helped give his band grab a Grammy nomination.

Long Haired Lover From Liverpool – Little Jimmy Osmond

I look back on this tune as my "first hit pop song." Funny thing, it only reached #38 in the U.S. but was a huge hit in the U.K. and Australia. You cannot deny the cheerfulness of "Long Haired Lover From Liverpool." I mean…can you?

Squeeze Box – The Who

Being one of the greatest rock bands of all-time doesn't allow much of an opportunity to use a banjo in your songs. But "Squeeze Box" is an exception. You don't get to see it live much, so here's the song in its finest form: the studio version.

Say You Love Me – Fleetwood Mac

If you look closely at this live version you'll see Lindsey Buckingham break a banjo string because he's rockin' it so hard. (3:30)

Bonus Tracks

Easy Street – from the Walking Dead, Season 7; Episode 3

No spoilers! Despite the fact that this song sounds like it was done in 1952, it's current and includes a banjo. Woot!

The Ballad of Jed Clampett

This is not something I tell many people: I didn't watch The Beverly Hillbillies. But I'm quite familiar with the theme song.

Roy Clark

You can't mention banjo without thinking of this guy. Here's a sweet clip of Roy and the great Bobby Thompson going nuts on Hee Haw. This music and scene brings me back to my early years. Maybe it's because of Hee Haw that I love the sound of a banjo so much to this day!

Glen Campbell – Southern Nights

Here's another fantastic Glen Campbell hit being performed with Jerry Reed. Like a few of the others, this tune is not centered around a banjo. But the instrument certainly adds flair to the track.

Butch Walker – Synthesizers

Technically, this is a banjolin. (A hybrid instrument that marries a banjo and mandolin or violin.) But it counts. Doesn't it?

All You Need is Love – The Beatles
Speaking of great rock bands like The Who, The Beatles have a song that contains banjo, too. But since they don't allow their songs to be posted on YouTube, you'll just have to take my word for it.
